I Care A Lot premieres at TIFF 2020

I Care A Lot was released at Toronto Film Festival this weekend to high praise - J Blakeson’s darkly humorous yet brutal satirical take on the American Dream seems to have resonated with how people are seeing the world at the moment.

Marc and J worked closely on the score that, like the overarching theme of the film, built upon the concept of greed and how far people are willing to go to achieve their desired outcome - whatever the cost.

The largely synth-led score tries to juxtapose this by creating a veneer of playful silkier sounds with a swagger across the first half of the film - hiding more uncomfortable and imperfect sounds beneath this layer of familiarity. As the story unfolds and the veneer gets scratched away these less predictable sounds begin to creep through, mirroring the wicked reality of the situation, redirecting the spotlight on to this unpleasant characteristic of the human condition.

For Marc it was a great excuse to hide himself away in his studio with an array of noise making machinery and have fun. Inspired by the likes of Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, CAN, Rival Consoles and Orbital - the score morphs in tone through the film with it’s off-kilter arpeggio-laden sardonic playfulness; into an atmospheric and at times aggressive textural assault.
